Pilanesberg National Park is situated in a 1.3 million year old volcano crater and covers 55 000 hectares, or 132 000 acres, of prime Big 5 Game Territory.
This malaria free reserve is also adjacent to Sun City for those who want to stay at the Lost City’s Palace Hotel. Pilanesberg Game reserve is also home to Bakabung Ivory Tree, and Tshukudu Lodges.
Pilanesberg is one of the smaller national game reserves where it is a lot easier to spot the Big 5 than other larger reserves such as Kurger National Park. |

This day Safari, from Johannesburg, is structured to avoid midday heat when wildlife activity and sightings are limited.
Clients have the opportunity to have the prime afternoon and early evening game viewing hours in Pilanesberg game reserve.
Nocturnal species, such as Lion, Leopard, and Hyena become active during these hours as well as a host of other wildlife.
Late afternoon game drives are conducted by qualified, and armed, Pilanesberg National Park field guide and ranger.
During these 3 hours you will have ample opportunity to spot many of the Pilanesberg game reserve animals. Elephants and Rhinos are also in abundance.
You will have an excellent chance to see Big 5 Animals as well as host of the other night creatures, so please do not leave cameras, film, sunglasses, hats and outdoor clothing behind. |
Pilanesberg Day Safari Itinerary (Summer Schedule)
- 10h30 – Meet & greet; drive to Pilanesberg National Park.
- 11h30 – Halfway 30-min stop for traditional African crafts / restroom facilities.
- 13h30 – Arrive at Bakabung Bus Lodge in Pilanesberg National Park for a delicious 3 course lunch on the terrace. The waterhole may be provide a preview of the game drive activity.
- 16h30 – Depart from Bakabung Safari Lodge for an afternoon safari; hosted by a qualified Pilanesberg national park ranger. He will be armed for your protection!
- 19h30 – return to the Bakabung Lodge reception; depart Pilanesberg National Park for Johannesburg.
- 21h30 – Arrive at your Hotel in Johannesburg

Two day safari omit day 2 below from 15h30 as this is when you will return to Johannesburg.
Day 1
Meet & greet you at your guest house. Depart Johannesburg for the Pilanesberg National Park, this is a scenic 2 hour drive, with an en-route refreshment, browse around stop at a traditional African roadside curio & craft market.
Arrival at the Pilanesberg National Park followed by a full buffet luncheon (own account) at the luxury Bakubung Bush Lodge whilst we take care of all the guests check-in arrangements. After lunch, guests have free time to relax and explore the lodge before the afternoon game drive.
It’s safari time! An afternoon/sunset open-top safari game drive departs the lodge reception area for an outdoor adventure into Africa’s Big Five territory.
Game drive returns to the lodge. Enjoy a delicious dinner then the remainder of the evening is at the guests leisure, with a possible late night visit (own account) to the Sun City/Lost City entertainment resort, via the lodge scheduled shuttle bus service. |

Day 2
An early morning wake up call.
Enjoy a full buffet breakfast overlooking the reserve.
The morning safari game drive departs from the lodge reception area and heads out in search of Big Five & other wildlife sightings.
Morning safari game drive returns to the lodge. The rest of the day is at leisure at the lodge, enjoy time relaxing next to the swimming pool, a spa treatment or a siesta in your room. Lunch (own account) can either be a full buffet or a smaller meal chosen from the terrace menu.
It’s safari time again! An afternoon/sunset open-top safari game drive departs from the lodge reception area for an outdoor adventure into Africa’s Big Five territory.
Game drive returns to the lodge. Enjoy a delicious dinner then the remainder of the evening is at the guests leisure.
Day 3
Time for a little extra sleep, and enjoy breakfast at your leisure. Freshen up and then check out, your luggage can be safely stored at the reception. Guests can enjoy a relaxed lazy day, with luncheon around the lodge swimming pool etc...
Meet the guide at reception for your return transfer to Johannesburg or to Johannesburg Airport.
